The Choice of Poverty by Clare and Francis of AssisiClare and Francis grew up in a time of dramatic changes in the society. They belong to two opposite and competing classes, divided by power and wealth. It was also a time of violence and growing misery. The intense spiritual thirst they shared brought them together in the ‘sequela Christi’. Following into the footprints of Jesus, as Francis wrote, or imitating Jesus, in Clare’s words, they embraced poverty. Truly spiritual, their choice materialized in a movement developing an alternative society—a ‘fraternitas’—with an approach to social and economic realities diametrically different to the dominant paradigm of their time.
